Medical Coding Specialist

The US Oncology Network

Under direct supervision, this role performs medical record coding activities for a multispecialty oncology practice. The position assigns ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for services rendered across Medical Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Imaging, with a focus on compliance, revenue integrity, and accurate reimbursement.

The role is based in-office at 82 Orland Square Drive in Orland Park, Illinois, and involves close collaboration with clinical teams, billing staff, and revenue cycle leadership within the Central Business Office.

Key responsibilities

  • Abstract clinical and demographic information from medical records to assign ICD and CPT codes according to coding and reimbursement guidelines.
  • Identify principal and secondary diagnoses with minimal error.
  • Maintain 97% coding accuracy based on internal QA reviews.
  • Record diagnostic procedures and assign appropriate procedure codes.
  • Request missing diagnosis information from physicians.
  • Update coding procedures and guidelines as needed.
  • Coordinate medical information and patient charts with medical assistants and other staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of medical information.
  • Assist with medical record-related reports and format reports according to established guidelines.
Requirements & Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current coding certification such as CPC, COC, CCS, or CCS-P, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2–3 years of coding experience, preferably in specialty-based practices.
  • Experience coding within at least one oncology discipline.

Preferred qualifications

  • Oncology-specific coding experience across multiple subspecialties.
  • Familiarity with PMS, EHRs, and oncology-focused systems such as iKnowMed, AthenaIDX, Centricity, ARIA, MOSAIQ, Epic, or Cerner.
  • Knowledge of revenue cycle processes within a Central Business Office structure.
