The Health Information Management Coding Specialist Outpatient provides timely and accurate clinical and administrative data to support optimal reimbursement for facility outpatient, ambulatory surgery, observation, and recurring accounts. This role may also support rehab or skilled care accounts.
Responsibilities include outpatient coding, APC assignment, CCI edits review, charge review, and ensuring coding quality and timeliness. The position collaborates with HIM staff, physicians, external customers, and other departments, participates in meetings, supports denial review and appeals activities, contributes to process improvement, and assists with training and mentoring. The role also helps maintain compliance with HIPAA, federal and state regulations, and departmental policies.
Education and experience
- RHIA, RHIT, or CCS credential required
- Eligible bachelor’s or associate degree graduates will be considered with the expectation that they pass the national exam
- Acute care outpatient coding experience preferred
- Knowledge of diagnosis and procedural coding using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 preferred
- Clinical documentation knowledge related to outpatient coding preferred

- Familiarity with EMR, email/Outlook, internet, encoder systems, and software such as VitalWare, Lawson, and Excel
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
