Responsible for performing coding and abstracting of both inpatient and outpatient medical records in accordance with ICD-10-CM and CPT coding rules, guidelines, and conventions, following hospital and PAM Health system procedures.
The ICD-10-CM codes should accurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education and training
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Coding, medical terminology, and anatomy/physiology courses preferred
- One of the following certifications preferred:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A)
- Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS)
- Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Registered Nurse (RN) with ICD-9-CM coding background
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with ICD-9-CM coding background
- Candidates with coder experience who are currently pursuing one of the listed credentials will also be considered
Experience and qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of coding experience preferred
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding, disease processes, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and laboratory terminology
- Ability to stay current with coding changes, ICD-10-CM Official Conventions, and Official ICD-9-CM/CPT Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
- Ability to assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis and procedure codes using the 3M coding application
- Familiarity with the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility-Patient Assessment Instrument (IRF-PAI) preferred
- Strong data entry and computer skills required
- Ability to communicate with customers, families, staff, management, physicians, and the general public
- Ability to work accurately and timely on repetitive, detail-oriented tasks
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations required
- Ability to work independently, exercise initiative, and make concise decisions
- Familiarity with TJC and state regulations, plus legal aspects of the medical record
