HIM Technician

The Health Information Management (HIM) Technician supports the daily management of health information and electronic health records. This role is responsible for maintaining complete, accurate, and secure patient records through filing, retrieval, distribution, analysis, scanning, indexing, patient portal support, release of information, and record completion.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing health records and record completion for discharged patients
  • Reviewing medical records for accuracy and completeness and assigning deficiencies for completion
  • Retrieving records or dictation as needed to resolve record deficiencies
  • Maintaining the incomplete record module and daily record status updates
  • Performing quality checks on medical records and scanned documents
  • Scanning and importing records into the electronic medical record
  • Creating forms and applying bar codes for form and patient identification
  • Processing release of information requests for billable requests, audits, and continuity of care
  • Reviewing sensitive requests in accordance with federal and state regulations
  • Handling subpoenas, court orders, and related correspondence
  • Supporting patients with patient portal access and portal-related questions
  • Performing additional duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Typing or keyboarding coursework preferred
  • Approved course in medical terminology preferred
  • Associate degree in a related field preferred

Experience

  • 2-5 years of experience in medical records in an acute care setting required

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of chart arrangement, medical terminology, filing systems, scanning processes, and release of information
  • Ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and handle sensitive situations tactfully
  • Familiarity with HIPAA privacy rules and regulatory standards such as The Joint Commission
