Abstractor/Coder I

The University of Chicago Physicians Group (UCPG) is seeking an Abstractor/Coder to support professional billing and compliance activities. This role focuses on reviewing and coding medical procedures, diagnoses, and physician visits to support accurate reimbursement and charge capture.

The position works closely with providers and staff on charge capture, documentation, denial review, appeals, and coding education. The team manages clinical revenue for physician billing, including frontend revenue capture, edits, audits, and invoice creation.

This position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement, including remote work options for coders in good standing.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2-4 years of experience in physician or healthcare billing and physician coding, or a recent graduate from an HIM bachelor's program with RHIA.
  • Two or more years of experience coding physician services, or a recent HIM graduate with RHIA.
  • Prior experience with electronic billing and medical record systems such as Epic, Last Word, and IDX required.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or large, complex hospital-physician billing group preferred.
  • Experience coding medicine primary and sub-specialty physician and procedure services strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience with Epic Professional Billing preferred.

Certifications

  • One of the following required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, CPC, or CCS.

Skills and knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Working knowledge of ICD and CPT coding systems, CMS guidelines, reimbursement compliance, modifiers, and documentation requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities, resolve problems, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
