The Coding Specialist II is responsible for coding, abstracting, and verifying charge data to support accurate billing and reimbursement across emergency department, same day surgery, outpatient clinic, observation, specialty clinic, and inpatient OB/newborn encounters.
This role performs charge review for clinic and hospital visits, ensures correct assignment of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, HCC, HEDIS CAT II, E/M, and modifier codes, and helps maintain coding integrity and compliance with Parkland policies and applicable coding guidelines. The position may also support and guide other coding staff and help improve workflow, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.

Education
- High school diploma required
- Completion of an approved coding program, or graduation from a Health Information Management program
- Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology and the ability to apply that knowledge
Experience
- At least 2 years of coding experience in an acute care setting or diverse clinical specialties
- Physician office coding, charging, and billing experience preferred
Certification
- AHIMA certification preferred/required through one of the following:
- RHIT
- RHIA
- CCS
- CCS-P
- CCA
- Or AAPC certification through one of the following:
- CPC
- CPC-H
- COC
Skills and Abilities
- Advanced coding and charge review skills
- Strong knowledge of ICD-9/ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT-4/HCPCS, HCC, HEDIS CAT II, E/M coding, APC classification, reimbursement structures, and coding edits
- Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, anatomy, and physiology
- Proficiency with encoder tools and coding workflows
- Experience with MS Office and Computer Assisted Coding (CAC)
- Knowledge of Epic EHR and 3M 360 coding/abstracting software preferred
Other Requirements
- Must score at least 80% on the pre-employment inpatient/outpatient coding test unless exempt as a contract coder with proven 95% accuracy at Parkland
- Must maintain coding credentials and continuing education hours
