Coder - Hospital Inpatient

Responsible for coding and abstracting inpatient accounts in accordance with coding guidelines.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Assign accurate diagnostic and procedure codes according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for inpatient hospital accounts.
  • Coordinate with clinical documentation and quality teams to ensure validation of MSDRG, patient safety indicators, and hospital acquired conditions are supported by physician documentation.
  • Monitor assigned work queues to ensure records are charged in a timely manner.
  • Generate coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed.
  • Stay current on coding conventions and coding updates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • Two years of inpatient coding experience.
  • CCS, RHIA, and/or RHIT preferred.

Required Professional License and/or Certifications

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - AHIMA
  • Or Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) - AAPC
  • Or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) - AAPC
  • Or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - AHIMA
  • Or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - AHIMA
