The Inpatient Coder Level III works extensively with physicians and other members of the health care team to improve the quality, completeness, and accuracy of medical record documentation. The role supports accurate clinical picture capture, severity of illness reporting, and reimbursement through coding and core measure abstraction.
This position reviews inpatient medical records using nationally recognized guidelines to ensure accurate documentation of diagnoses, procedures, and DRG assignment. It also supports documentation improvement efforts related to patient safety indicators, hospital acquired conditions, and hospital outcomes reporting.
The coder collaborates with other disciplines to identify documentation opportunities and route them to the appropriate performance improvement committee when needed.
Education
- High school diploma required
- Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology preferred
- RHIA preferred
- Completion of a college-based coding program or coding certificate program preferred, AHIMA-approved preferred
Certification
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of inpatient acute care coding experience required
- Recent hands-on production coding experience required
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of Core Measures, HAC, and AHRQ PSI/Harm Measures preferred
- Proficiency in clinical and business applications preferred at time of hire
- Strong critical thinking and customer service skills required
- Ability to work independently and autonomously with minimal supervision
- Skilled use of multiple computer applications required
- Near visual acuity and ability to review documents and electronic files for long periods
- Ability to manage daily work duties accurately and efficiently
