The Lead Coder position serves as a liaison and subject matter expert between coding staff, operations, and the Director. This role is responsible for accurate coding of professional services from medical record documentation, including complex cases and multiple physician specialties. The coder assigns ICD-9/10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT codes, E/M coding, and interventional and surgical coding, and also handles new and experimental treatments and therapies.
This position is full time and works remotely from home in a tax-exempt location tied to Lees Summit, Missouri. The schedule is 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, 40 hours per week.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two or more coding certifications, such as CPC or CPMA, with active maintenance required
- 5 years of comprehensive medical record coding experience in high-level CPT/HCPCS and ICD-9/10 for multi-specialty physician services; equivalent demonstrated skill may be considered
- Experience in an academic teaching health care organization preferred
- Ability to identify documentation improvement opportunities
- Knowledge of insurance, third-party, and government reimbursement programs, including Medicare and Medicaid
- Knowledge of medical insurance billing and collection processes
- Extensive knowledge of CPT, ICD-9/10-CM, HCPCS, and medical terminology across multiple physician specialties
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Familiarity with physician billing systems and medical information systems
- Proficiency with computer hardware, software systems, programs, and devices
- Expert knowledge of Medicare rules, LCDs, NCCI edits, and procedure code sequencing
- Ability to educate physicians and staff, including presentation preparation and delivery
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented and able to work independently and in a team environment
