General Description
The purpose of this role is to process requests for records in a prompt, courteous manner in a fast-paced, high-volume, customer-focused environment. The Release of Information Specialist ensures accuracy and safeguards patient privacy by adhering to company policy, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2 regulations. This position works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Duties
- Serves as Custodian of Records
- Processes incoming records requests for audits, insurance, court orders, treatment, and Social Security purposes
- Complies with subpoenas and appears in court as required
- Verifies patient identity and confirms authorization validity
- Performs quality checks to ensure accuracy and confidentiality
- Completes Records of Disclosures
- Uploads records into patient information systems
- Reviews consents for HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 compliance
- Redacts records when necessary
- Conducts face-to-face contact with clients requesting records
- Completes same-day requests when permitted
- Provides excellent internal and external customer service
- Performs other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Four years of experience in medical records required
- Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered
- Experience with trauma-informed services, cognitive behavioral therapies including DBT, and motivational therapies preferred
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of trauma-informed theories, principles, and practices preferred
- Familiarity with community trauma, intergenerational and historical trauma, parallel processes, and universal precautions preferred
Certifications and Licenses
- Valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to pass TB screening, criminal background check, and drug screen
