General Description

The purpose of this role is to process requests for records in a prompt, courteous manner in a fast-paced, high-volume, customer-focused environment. The Release of Information Specialist ensures accuracy and safeguards patient privacy by adhering to company policy, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2 regulations. This position works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Duties

  • Serves as Custodian of Records
  • Processes incoming records requests for audits, insurance, court orders, treatment, and Social Security purposes
  • Complies with subpoenas and appears in court as required
  • Verifies patient identity and confirms authorization validity
  • Performs quality checks to ensure accuracy and confidentiality
  • Completes Records of Disclosures
  • Uploads records into patient information systems
  • Reviews consents for HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 compliance
  • Redacts records when necessary
  • Conducts face-to-face contact with clients requesting records
  • Completes same-day requests when permitted
  • Provides excellent internal and external customer service
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Four years of experience in medical records required
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered
  • Experience with trauma-informed services, cognitive behavioral therapies including DBT, and motivational therapies preferred

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed theories, principles, and practices preferred
  • Familiarity with community trauma, intergenerational and historical trauma, parallel processes, and universal precautions preferred

Certifications and Licenses

  • Valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass TB screening, criminal background check, and drug screen
