Job Summary
The Medical Records Clerk supports accurate and timely medical record management for the ambulatory surgical associates clinic. This role involves reviewing records for completeness, scanning documents into the electronic medical record, assisting with patient access and record requests, and supporting scheduling, registration, insurance processes, and payment posting.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze medical records for completeness and accuracy.
- Scan miscellaneous documents into the electronic medical record and route items for physician review and signature.
- Monitor the quality and timeliness of medical record documentation.
- Retrieve and distribute mail to the hospital mail room.
- Disclose health information for treatment and payment in accordance with policy and procedures.
- Answer phones, screen visitors, and greet patients professionally.
- Scan medical record requests and other documents into electronic format for storage.
- Retrieve copies of records for patients, insurers, federal agencies, or attorneys per company policy.
- Attend in-services and committee functions related to medical record keeping.
- Maintain HIPAA privacy and security compliance.
- Support physician peer review and quality improvement activities.
- Assist with scheduling, registration, insurance processes, and payment posting.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- One year of clerical experience.
- Medical records experience and/or training required.
- Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
- Basic knowledge of medical/surgical terms, anatomy and physiology, pathology, and medical office procedures.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods, maintain accuracy, and pay close attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure in a high-stress environment.
- Frequent standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination for basic office equipment.
