The Release of Information (ROI) Specialist III is responsible for interpreting requests for copies of electronic medical records and ensuring proper authorization and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements related to the privacy and security of protected health information.
The role prioritizes requests directly related to patient care, ensures records are securely delivered, applies patient-identification controls using the electronic Master Patient Index, and limits disclosure of clinical documentation according to the Minimum Necessary Rule under HIPAA.
This position also performs thorough searches across current and legacy medical record systems, including paper records, updates the ROI module in the electronic medical record, and supports the Accounting of Disclosures requirement. The specialist interacts daily with patients, families, attorneys, government officials, physicians, and others while maintaining compliance with hospital policies, the 21st Century Cures Act, and HIPAA regulations.
Education and experience
- Associate degree, preferably in Health Information Management, or AHIMA ROI micro-credential, plus 1 year of ROI work experience.
- In lieu of an associate degree, high school diploma or GED plus 3 years of work experience, including 2 years in HIM and 1 year in ROI.
- For internal applicants, in lieu of an associate degree or AHIMA ROI micro-credential, 2 years of ROI work experience and meeting or exceeding JHHS quality and productivity expectations for the previous 6 months.
