Under the direction of the HIM Supervisor, this position is responsible for maintaining confidentiality of paper and electronic medical records and information. The role involves releasing medical information according to State and Federal rules and regulations, answering telephones, processing requests accurately, scanning and filing documents into the EMR, maintaining old records and x-ray films, and providing in-house runner coverage as needed.
The HIM Clerk / Scanner interacts with clinic departments, personnel, and outside providers in a professional and friendly manner to support positive internal and external customer relationships.
Key duties include document preparation, scanning records into the EHR, filing documents into the correct document type within the EMR, processing incoming mail, sending specialty progress notes to the PCP daily, participating in file audits, investigating duplicate medical record numbers, supporting special projects, creating charts for new patients, and assisting with quarterly committee meetings as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years' experience working with a certified EHR application preferred
- Current NextGen NCP certification in one or more of the following preferred: EHR, PM, Document Management, or EAS
- Training experience preferred
- Clinical certifications are a plus
Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of HIPM and other State and Federal laws regarding release of information and patient confidentiality
- Ability to accurately process requests for protected information
- Strong telephone and customer service skills
- Ability to cross-train on HIM procedures and provide coverage for satellite clinics
- Ability to meet production standards of 125 pieces of paper per hour when scanning and filing into the EMR
