The HIM Technician is responsible for processing protected health information (PHI) for permanent electronic storage in the electronic medical record (EMR) while maintaining the integrity of the patient’s legal health record. This role handles prepping, scanning, and indexing patient care documents into the Health Information Management System (HIMS) to support accurate filing, patient identification, and record retrieval.
The position also processes internal and external medical records requests in compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, hospital policies, and state law. It works closely with hospital staff, physicians, and revenue cycle team members to support continuity of care, privacy, confidentiality, and overall HIM department performance.
Education
- High school diploma or GED/equivalent required
- Pursuance of an HIM degree preferred
Experience
- Experience meeting deadlines and/or productivity standards required
- 1 year of HIM Technician experience preferred
- Experience handling confidential information preferred
- Previous experience in a hospital HIM department or medical office preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of medical records format and content for inpatient and outpatient encounters
- Strong attention to detail and quality
- Ability to perform multiple tasks with frequent interruptions
- Ability to operate HIMS and related equipment, including fax, microfilm, scanner, transcription system, EMR, and ROI tools
- Proficient with computers and office equipment
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, clinical staff, and leadership
