Health Information Management Technician 1

New York State Office of Mental Health

As a Health Information Management Technician 1, you will support the accuracy, documentation, coding, and audit activities for clinical and mental health records within a psychiatric center.

  • Ensure the accuracy of clinical progress notes, laboratory reports, and treatment records.
  • Review facility staff medical and clinical services documentation for Medicaid funding.
  • Transcribe and code medical, clinical, and mental health services.
  • Maintain databases for tracking health information disclosures.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to facility and clinical staff on health information management requirements.
  • Conduct audits for utilization review activities and report deficiencies to the Utilization Review Committee.
  • Implement corrective actions based on internal and external audit findings.
  • May supervise lower-level clerical and support staff.
Requirements & Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

  • Outside State Service: Current AHIMA certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) under the HELPS program.
  • Within State Service: One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
