Provides medical records support, including maintenance of medical records, filing, scanning documents into the electronic health record, and fulfilling medical records requests. Works with provider and staff teams to support patient care coordination and patient satisfaction.
Examples of duties
- Coordinates and scans electronic medical records.
- Verifies documentation flowing into the electronic health record and alerts IT support when errors are detected.
- Scans documentation into the correct patient chart according to established guidelines.
- Audits indexed documents for accuracy and follows standardized policies and procedures.
- Coordinates paper medical records and distributes records for physician signature.
- Uses TouchWorks EHR and IDX to determine chart locations.
- Faxes medical records requests and information requested by physicians and nurses.
- Assists reception when needed.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and follows federal and state laws regarding release of patient records.
- Assists faculty, resident physicians, nurses, and clinic staff in locating records onsite and off-site.
- Communicates with patients, physicians, and hospital staff in a professional manner.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- Eighteen months of combined qualifying education and/or work experience.
- Qualifying education may include coursework in a health-related field.
- 30 semester hours equals one year.
- 60 semester hours or an associate degree equals eighteen months.
- Qualifying work experience includes preparation and/or maintenance of medical records in a health care facility or program.
- Current valid RHIT and/or RHIA registration and certification by AHIMA may be required based on institutional requirements.
