Health Information Technician I - Tumor Registry

Cedars-Sinai

Performs specialized health information activities necessary to organize, maintain, and use electronic and paper patient health records.

Depending on the area assigned, this role may focus on tumor registry follow-up monitoring and reporting, patient follow-up letters, locating and requesting patient records for registrars, data entry, telephone support, maintaining follow-up timeliness and percentages for accreditation, or serving as a satellite representative at off-campus locations.

The position also includes analyzing and researching errors, participating in quality reviews, compiling and trending data, generating reports, and querying multiple electronic record and tracking systems.

The role requires understanding chart organization and content, as well as Cedars-Sinai and external requirements related to documentation and privacy.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or some college preferred
  • RHIT preferred upon hire
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a health care setting or related field
  • Experience with active case finding through review of admission logs, pathology reports, radiology reports, cytology reports, and oncology logs to identify reportable cancer cases highly preferred
  • Experience with cancer tumor registry is a plus

Skills and Experience

  • Basic medical terminology and knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Basic knowledge of ICD-10
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Detailed knowledge of medical record content and chart organization
  • Detailed knowledge of documentation and privacy regulatory standards
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • English proficiency in speaking and writing; bilingual skills are a plus
  • Strong data analysis and research skills for error correction
  • Knowledge of hospital computer systems and EMRs, including EPIC
