Medical Records Specialist

Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is a major tertiary care provider in Queens and part of NYC Health + Hospitals. The facility includes 545 beds and serves as a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station, and a 911 Receiving Hospital.

Under supervision, this role analyzes, abstracts, codes, or indexes patients’ medical records in a healthcare setting in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations. The position supports system resource utilization and service improvement through coding and reporting.

Essential duties

  • Review, analyze, abstract, code, or index patients’ medical records.
  • Prepare and maintain records, abstracts, and summaries.
  • Perform comparative studies to assess data quality.
  • Complete data correction forms.
  • Prepare required report forms, including Congenital Malformations, Alzheimer’s Disease, and other Dementias reports.
  • Instruct healthcare staff on current coding classifications.
  • May supervise and train other professional administrative staff in the medical record department.
  • May organize, file, and retrieve medical records.
Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, approved by a state department of education or a recognized accrediting organization.
  • Completion of a coding or billing, medical record technology, or health information technology (HIT) program approved by a nationally accredited agency such as AHIMA or CAHIIM; or
  • Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by AHIMA, Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by AAPC, or Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) by MAB; or
  • Two years of satisfactory experience in coding and/or abstracting medical records in a healthcare setting.
