The Maternal Medical Records Abstractor will review and extract pertinent information from medical records and other sources to accurately document the events leading up to and including each case for review by the Maryland Maternal Mortality Review Team (MMRT).
This role supports the Maryland Maternal Mortality Review Program by gathering information from a wide range of records, entering data into the MMRIA system, and assisting during case review meetings.

Required skills and abilities
- Demonstrated understanding of normal and abnormal processes of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and the health care system
- Ability to work within short time frames and adapt to changing program requirements
- Strong attention to detail
- Knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality laws
- Ability to communicate objectively and without bias
- Understanding of social determinants contributing to maternal mortality
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Proficiency with word processing and data entry tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
- Ability to maintain organized, accurate records and database information
- Ability to work with people from diverse linguistic, cultural, and economic backgrounds
Education and experience
- At least 5 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional medical, administrative, or managerial experience in public health or health care, with major duties involving obstetrics, antenatal care, and postpartum care
- Experience in medical record review, such as peer review or FIMR, with an in-depth understanding of medical record organization
