Senior Medical Coding Subject Matter Expert for a federal health contract supporting the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Headquarters.
This role serves as the technical lead for medical coding compliance and quality within the Medical Coding Program Branch (MCPB). The position supports coding guidance, audit support, training, policy interpretation, and reimbursement-related encounter data validation across Military Treatment Facilities.
The work is full-time and on-site at DHA Headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia, with a Monday through Friday schedule from 0700 to 1700 Eastern Time. No telework is anticipated.
The contract is contingent on award, with an anticipated start date on or about 24 September 2026.
Active credential in good standing from one of the following:
- AAPC Certified Coding Specialist for Physician-based coding (CCS-P)
- AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- AHIMA Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) with coding specialization
Additional qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years of professional medical coding experience
- At least 5 years of experience in a Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, or large federal healthcare environment
- Working knowledge of DoD Instruction 6040.42 and DHA coding guidance
- Working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS
- Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Health Administration, Nursing, or related field, or equivalent experience
- Active CAC eligibility or ability to obtain Tier 2 suitability
- U.S. citizenship required
- Ability to commute daily to Falls Church, Virginia
Preferred experience includes:
- Military Health System coding experience
- Experience with MHS GENESIS, CHCS, or other legacy DoD EHRs
- Auditing experience under the MHS Coding Compliance Plan or similar framework
- Additional coding or CDI credentials such as CDIP or CCDS
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or higher
- Prior support for DHA Headquarters or National Capital Region military facilities
