Complete List With Place Of Services Codes (2023 Updated)

Descriptions of 99 place of service codes can be found below. Use the POS codes to describe a place where a service was performed.

Note: Reimbursement needs to be checked with the individual payers.

Place Of Service 01 (POS 01)

POS 01 can be used when the place of service is a pharmacy. A pharmacy is a location where medically related items are provided to patients.

Place of service 01 is effective forom October 1, 2003.

Place Of Service 02 (POS 02)

POS 2 can be used when the service is performed in with the help of telecommunication technology.

The place of service of the provider needs to be outside the patients home when the service is provided. (Use POS 10 if the patient is at home.)

Place of service 02 is effective forom January 1, 2003 and a description change effective January 1, 2022. This code is applicable for Medicare April 1, 2022.

Place Of Service 03 (POS 03)

POS 3 can be used when the place of service is a school. A school is a facility with the purpose of education.

Place of service 03 is effective from January 1, 2003.

Place Of Service 04 (POS 04)

POS 4 can be used when the place of service is a homeless shelter. A homeless shelter is a facility that provides temporary housing for homeless people.

Emergency shelters are included.

Place of service 04 is effective from January 1, 2003.

Place Of Service 05 (POS 05)

POS 5 can be used as a place of service if it is an Indian Health Service Facility. The facility (or location) must be free-standing and owned by an Indian health service.

The therapeutic-, diagnostic-, and rehabilitation services are performed on American Indians and Alaska Natives who do not require a hospital.

Place of service 06 is effective from January 1, 2003.

Place Of Service 06 (POS 06)

POS 6 can be used as a place of service Indian Health Service Facility. The facility (or location) needs to be provider based and rendered by, or under the supervision of physicians to American Indians and Alaska Natives admitted as outpatients or inpatients.

Place of service 07 is effective from January 1, 2003.

Place Of Service 07 (POS 07)

POS 7 can be used when the place of service when the location or facility is an American Indian or Alaska Native tribe or tribal organization (federally recognized) under a 638 agreement.

The facility needs to provide health services to tribal members who do not require a hospital. The services can be diagnostic, therapeutic (surgical and non-surgical), and rehabilitation.

Place of service 07 is effective from January 1, 2003.

Place Of Service 08 (POS 08)

POS 8 can be used as a place of service when the facility or organization is owned, under a 638 agreement, by an American Indian or Alaska Native (or tribal) organization.

The facility or organization must provide therapeutic, diagnostic, and rehabilitation services to its members as inpatients or outpatients.

Place of service 08 is effective from January 1, 2003.

Place Of Service 09 (POS 09)

POS 9 can be used if the place of service is a jail/prison, detention center, reformatory, or any similar facility which the government runs for the rehabilitation or confinement of criminal offenders.

Place of service 09 is effective from July 1, 2006.

Place Of Service 10 (POS 10)

POS 10 can be coded if the place of service is service is provided through telecommunication technology.

The patient must be located in their home when the health service is provided. (Use POS 02 if the patient is not at home.)

Place of service 10 is effective from January 1, 2022, and available to Medicare on the 1st of April 2022.

Place Of Service 11 (POS 11)

POS 11 can be used when the place of service is an office. This is any location where the health professional routinely provides diagnosis, health examinations, and treatment of illness or injury on an ambulatory basis other than a:

  • military treatment facility;
  • State or local public health clinic;
  • community health center;
  • skilled nursing facility (SNF);
  • hospital; or
  • intermediate care facility (ICF).

Place Of Service 12

POS 12 can be billed when the place of service is the patient’s home. This is a location other than a facility or hospital where the patient receives care.

Place Of Service 13

POS 13 may be used when the place of service is an assisted living facility. This facility is a congregate residential facility with self-contained living units.

Resident needs support is provided on a 24/7 basis, and some health care is delivered.

Place Of Service 13 is effective from the 1st of October 2003.

Place Of Service 14

POS 14 can be used when the place of service is a group home. A group home is a place with shared living areas where the following services can be provided:

  • supervision;
  • behavioral services;
  • minimal services;
  • social services; and
  • custodial services.

Place of service 14 is effective from the 1st of October 2003.

Place Of Service 15

POS 15 can be used if the place of service is a mobile unit. A mobile unit is a facility that can be moved and can provide:

  • screening services;
  • preventive services;
  • diagnostic services; and/or
  • treatment services.

Place of service 15 is effective from the 1st of January 2003.

Place Of Service 16

POS 16 may be billed when the place of service is temporary lodging. This can be a hotel, hostel, campground, cruise ship, or other place where the patient receives care but is not identified by any other place of service code.

Place of service 16 is effective from the 1st of January 2008.

Place Of Service 17

POS 17 can be used to specify that the place of service is a walk-in retail health clinic. This is a walk-in clinic and isn’t a:

  • urgent care facility;
  • office;
  • pharmacy; or an
  • independent facility.

This code can be used if other POS codes do not describe it. It needs to be located within a retail operation and provides on an ambulatory basis and provide primary care services.

Place of service 17 is effective from the 1st of May 2010.

Place Of Service 18

POS 18 may describe a place of service as a place of employment/worksite.

The location can’t be described by another place of service codes and is owned by a private or public entity where the patient is employed.

The health provided provides the patient with episodic or ongoing occupational:

  • rehabilitative services;
  • therapeutic services; or
  • medical services.

Place of service code 18 is effective from the 1st of January 2013.

Place Of Service 19

POS 19 can be used as a place of service code when the health service is performed in an off-campus outpatient hospital. (Use POS 22 if the place of service is on campus).

This is a place for sick or injured persons who do not require institutionalization or hospitalization. It is an off-capus hospital provider that provides:

  • therapeutic (surgical) services.
  • therapeutic (nonsurgical) services.
  • diagnostic services, and
  • rehabilitation services.

Place of service code 19 is effective from the 1st of January 2016.

Place Of Service 20

POS 20 can be used if the place of service is an urgent care facility. This facility is distinct from an emergency room in a hospital, office, or clinic whose purpose is to treat and diagnose injury or illness for (unscheduled) ambulatory patients who seek medical attention.

Place of service code 20 is effective from the 1st of January 2003.

Place Of Service 21

POS 21 can be used if the place of service is an inpatient hospital. Psychiatric facilities are not included. This facility provides:

  • rehabilitation services;
  • therapeutic (surgical) services;
  • therapeutic (non-surgical) services; and or
  • diagnostic services.

The services are provided to patients under the supervision of physicians and admitted for a wide range of medical conditions.

Place Of Service 22

POS 22 can be used to specify that the place of service is an on-campus outpatient hospital. Use POS 19 if the place of service is off-campus.

This place is a portion of a hospital’s main campus where the following service is provided:

  • rehabilitation;
  • diagnostic;
  • therapeutic (nonsurgical); and
  • therapeutic (surgical).

The services are performed for injured or sick patients who do not require institutionalization or hospitalization.

Place of service code 22 is effective from the 1st of January 2016.

Place Of Service 23

POS 23 can be used when the place of service is an emergency room of a hospital. The emergency room is a hospital where treatment and diagnosis is provided for injuries or illnesses that are considered an emergency.

Place Of Service 24

POS 24 can be used when the place of service is an ambulatory surgical center.

The center is (other than a physician’s office) a freestanding facility. Diagnostic and surgical services are provided on an ambulatory basis.

Place Of Service 25

POS 25 can be billed when the place of service is a birthing center. Hospital maternity facilities and physician’s offices are excluded.

The center provided services for labor, immediate postpartum care, and delivery and care for newborns.

Place Of Service 26

POS 26 can be billed when the place of service is a military treatment facility. The medical facility needs to be one or more of the Uniformed Services.

Be aware that MTFs (Military Treatment Facilities) refer to specific former U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) facilities.

They are currently designated as Uniformed Service Treatment Facilities.

Place Of Service 27

POS 27 can be billed for outreach site/ street. This can be a non-permanent place on a found environment or street and can be billed if another POS code does not describe it in more detail. This is where health professionals provide homeless people screening, treatments, and preventative or diagnostic services.

Place Of Service 29

Place Of Service 30

Place Of Service 31

POS 31 can be billed when the place of service is a skilled nursing facility. This facility provides skilled nursing care (inpatient) and other services.

The services are provided to patients who need the following:

  • medical services; or
  • nursing services.

The facility does not provide the same level of care or treatment as a hospital.

Place Of Service 32

POS 32 can be billed when the place of service is a nursing facility. The facility provides nursing and related services to residents.

The services are for disabled/injured or sick persons. It can also provide, other than individuals with intellectual disabilities, regular health services above the level of custodial care.

Place Of Service 33

POS 33 can be used when the place of service is a custodial care facility. This place provides:

  • board services;
  • room services; and
  • other personal assistance services.

The services are usually provided for the long term. The medical component is not included.

Place Of Service 34

POS 34 can identify a place of service as a hospice. A hospice provides supportive and palliative care services for terminally ill patients and their families.

The home of the patient is not included in this code.

POS 50 can be used when the place of service is a federally qualified health center. The center is a facility that provides Medicare beneficiaries and is located in a medically underserved area.

Under the general direction of a physician, it provides s preventive primary medical care.

Place Of Service 51

POS 51 can be used to report inpatient psychiatric facilities as a place of service. A psychiatric facility provides inpatient psychiatric services for mental illness treatment and diagnosis.

The care is 24/7 and under the supervision of a physician.

Place Of Service 52

POS 52 can be used when the place of service is a psychiatric facility (partial hospitalization).

The psychiatric facility provides a planned therapeutic program to treat and diagnose mental illness. Patients do not require full-time hospitalization.

The patient needs broader programs than those provided (from outpatient visits) by hospital-based or hospital-affiliated facilities.

Place Of Service 53

POS 53 can be billed when the place of service is a community mental health center.

A community mental health center is a facility that provides the following services:

  • day treatment;
  • psychosocial rehabilitation services;
  • education services;
  • consultation services;
  • 24-hour-a-day emergency care services;
  • screening for patients being considered for admission to State mental health facilities to determine the appropriateness of such admission;
  • other partial hospitalization services; and
  • outpatient services, including:
    • the elderly
    • residents of the CMHC’s mental health services area who have been discharged from inpatient treatment at a mental health facility
    • specialized outpatient services for children; and
    • individuals who are chronically ill.

Place Of Service 54

POS 54 can be used to identify an intermediate care facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities as a place of service.

The facility provides health-related care and is a primary focus. It provides a level of care or treatment available in a hospital or SNF, but the services are not above custodial patient care.

Place Of Service 55

POS 55 can be billed when the place of service is a residential substance abuse treatment facility.

This facility provides services to live-in residents for drug and alcohol abuse. The patients do not require acute medical care.

Provided services include:

  • psychological testing;
  • family counseling;
  • drugs and supplies;
  • group therapy;
  • laboratory tests;
  • room and board; and
  • counseling.

Place Of Service 56

POS 56 can be used when the place of service is a psychiatric residential treatment center.

The center can be a distinct part of a facility for psychiatric care or a stand-alone facility. therapeutically planned services are performed 24/7 by the staffed group in a learning and living environment.

Place Of Service 57

POS 57 can be used if the place of service is a nonresidential substance abuse treatment facility.

This is a facility where alcohol and drug abusers are treated ambulatory. Services that are provided include:

  • counseling;
  • family counseling;
  • drugs and supplies;
  • group therapy;
  • individual therapy;
  • laboratory tests; and
  • psychological testing.

Place of service code 57 is effective from the 1st of October 2003.

Place Of Service 58

POS 58 can be used when the place of service is a nonresidential opioid treatment facility.

Treatments for opioid use disorder are provided on an ambulatory basis. Provided services include forms of Medication Assisted Treatment (e.g., methadone).

Place Of Service 59

POS 59 is currently unassigned as a place of service code.

Place Of Service 60

POS 60 can be used when the place of service is a mass immunization center. This is a place where influenza virus vaccinations and pneumococcal pneumonia is administered.

The services are paper claims, electronic media claims, or the roster billing method. This mostly happens in a mass immunization setting (for example, a pharmacy, public health center, or mall).

It may also include a physician’s office setting.

Place Of Service 61

POS 61 can be used when the place of service is a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation facility.

Comprehensive rehabilitation services are provided. The supervision of a physician to inpatients with physical disabilities is required.
