Official Description

Speech audiometry threshold, automated; with speech recognition

Common Language Description

Automated hearing tests, specifically speech audiometry threshold testing with speech recognition, utilize a computerized system to assess a patient's hearing capabilities. During this procedure, ambient noise microphones are strategically positioned near the patient's ears to capture sound levels accurately. Ear inserts, which do not fully occlude the ear canal, are placed in the patient's ears and connected to speakers that deliver auditory stimuli. The automated testing device is programmed to conduct specific tests aimed at determining the patient's hearing thresholds. In the context of CPT® Code 0210T, the automated speech audiometry testing measures the lowest intensity of speech stimuli that the patient can hear at least 50 percent of the time, with the results being scored by the computer. Building upon this, CPT® Code 0211T incorporates speech recognition testing alongside the threshold assessment. This aspect of the test evaluates the patient's ability to accurately repeat a series of words presented by the computerized system. The computer then calculates the percentage of words that the patient correctly repeats, providing a quantitative measure of speech recognition ability. This comprehensive approach allows for a detailed understanding of both hearing thresholds and speech discrimination capabilities.

1. Indications

The procedure is indicated for the assessment of hearing capabilities in patients who may have hearing impairments. It is particularly useful for evaluating conditions that affect speech perception and understanding, including but not limited to:

  • Hearing Loss Patients presenting with symptoms of hearing loss may require this test to determine the extent and nature of their impairment.
  • Auditory Processing Disorders Individuals suspected of having auditory processing issues can benefit from this testing to evaluate their ability to recognize and process speech.
  • Post-Auditory Surgery Evaluation Patients who have undergone ear or auditory system surgeries may need this assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure.
  • Monitoring Hearing Changes Regular testing may be indicated for patients with known hearing issues to monitor any changes in their auditory function over time.

2. Procedure

The procedure involves several key steps to ensure accurate assessment of the patient's hearing capabilities.

  • Step 1: Preparation The patient is positioned comfortably in a sound-controlled environment to minimize external noise interference. Ambient noise microphones are placed near the patient's ears to monitor sound levels during testing.
  • Step 2: Ear Insert Placement Ear inserts are carefully placed in the patient's ears. These inserts are designed to deliver sound stimuli while allowing some ambient sound to enter, ensuring that the test results reflect the patient's natural hearing environment.
  • Step 3: Programming the Device The automated testing device is programmed with the specific parameters for the speech audiometry threshold test. This includes setting the intensity levels and the types of speech stimuli to be used during the assessment.
  • Step 4: Conducting the Test The automated system delivers speech stimuli through the ear inserts. The patient is instructed to listen carefully and respond by repeating the words they hear. The computer records the responses and calculates the speech audiometry threshold.
  • Step 5: Speech Recognition Assessment In conjunction with the threshold testing, the system evaluates the patient's speech recognition ability. The patient is presented with a set of words, and their task is to repeat these words accurately. The computer scores the responses, determining the percentage of words repeated correctly.

3. Post-Procedure

After the completion of the automated speech audiometry threshold and speech recognition testing, the results are analyzed and compiled into a report. The healthcare provider will review the findings with the patient, discussing any identified hearing impairments or speech recognition difficulties. Depending on the results, further evaluation or intervention may be recommended, which could include referrals to audiologists or speech-language pathologists for additional assessment and management. Patients may also be advised on follow-up testing to monitor their hearing status over time.
