Common Language Description

Computed tomography (CT), commonly known as a CT scan, is a diagnostic imaging procedure that utilizes advanced X-ray technology and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the head or brain. This procedure begins with the patient being positioned on a specialized examination table designed for the CT scanner. Initially, a preliminary scan is conducted to establish the starting position for the imaging process. During the CT scan, the examination table moves slowly through the scanner while multiple X-ray beams and electronic detectors rotate around the area being examined. The system measures the amount of radiation absorbed by the body, which is crucial for generating accurate images. As the X-ray beams and detectors rotate, the data collected is processed by a computer program, resulting in two-dimensional images that represent the internal structures of the head or brain. These images are displayed on a monitor for the physician's review. The physician can assess the images in real-time and may request additional sections to focus on specific areas of interest for further evaluation. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing various conditions affecting the head or brain. It is important to note that CPT® Code 70470 is specifically used when the CT scan is performed without intravenous contrast material initially, followed by the administration of contrast material and the acquisition of further sections. For CT scans performed without contrast, CPT® Code 70450 is used, while CPT® Code 70460 is applicable when intravenous contrast is administered prior to the scanning process. The physician ultimately interprets the findings from the CT scan, documenting any abnormalities observed during the examination.
