Common Language Description

Computed tomography (CT), also known as computerized tomography, is a sophisticated imaging technique that utilizes specialized x-ray equipment and advanced computer technology to generate multiple cross-sectional images of specific body regions. The CPT® Code 70481 specifically refers to a CT scan performed on the orbit (the eye socket), sella (the area housing the pituitary gland), posterior fossa (the region at the base of the skull), or any part of the ear (including outer, middle, or inner ear) with the use of contrast material. The procedure begins with the patient being positioned on the CT examination table, where an initial scan is conducted to establish the starting position for the imaging process. During the CT scan, the examination table moves slowly through the scanner while numerous x-ray beams and electronic detectors rotate around the targeted body area. This rotation allows for the measurement of radiation absorption, which is crucial for creating detailed images. The data collected is processed by a computer program, resulting in two-dimensional cross-sectional images that are displayed on a monitor for the physician's review. The physician can assess the images in real-time and may request additional scans to focus on specific areas of interest. It is important to note that CPT® Code 70481 is used when intravenous contrast material is administered prior to the CT scan, enhancing the visibility of structures and potential abnormalities within the examined region. For CT scans of the head or brain without contrast, CPT® Code 70480 is applicable, while CPT® Code 70482 is designated for cases where a CT is initially performed without contrast, followed by the administration of contrast for further imaging.
