Common Language Description

Computed tomography (CT), also known as a CT scan, is a diagnostic imaging procedure that utilizes advanced X-ray technology and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of specific areas within the body. In the case of CPT® Code 70486, the focus is on the maxillofacial area, which encompasses critical structures such as the forehead, sinuses, nose, nasal bones, and the upper and lower jaws (maxilla and mandible). It is important to note that the orbit, which includes the eye socket, is not part of this imaging study. During the procedure, the patient is carefully positioned on a CT examination table, and an initial scan is conducted to establish the starting point for the imaging process. As the table gradually moves through the CT scanner, a series of X-ray beams and electronic detectors rotate around the targeted area, capturing data on the amount of radiation absorbed by the tissues. This information is then processed by a computer program, resulting in high-resolution 2D images that are displayed on a monitor for the physician's review. The physician can assess these images in real-time and may request additional scans to focus on specific areas of interest, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation. The final step involves the physician interpreting the CT scan results, identifying any abnormalities, and documenting the findings in a written report.
