Common Language Description

Computed tomography (CT), also known as a CT scan, is a diagnostic imaging procedure that utilizes advanced X-ray technology and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of specific areas within the body. In the case of CPT® Code 70487, the focus is on the maxillofacial area, which encompasses critical structures such as the forehead, sinuses, nose, nasal bones, and the upper and lower jaws (maxilla and mandible). It is important to note that the orbit, which includes the eye socket, is not part of this imaging study. During the procedure, the patient is carefully positioned on a CT examination table, and an initial scan is conducted to establish the starting point for the imaging process. Following this, the CT scan is executed as the table gradually moves through the scanner. This movement allows multiple X-ray beams and electronic detectors to rotate around the targeted body region, measuring the radiation absorption and capturing detailed images. The data collected is then processed by a computer program, resulting in 2D cross-sectional images that are displayed on a monitor for the physician's review. The physician can assess these images in real-time and may request additional scans to focus on specific areas of interest. The use of intravenous contrast material is a key aspect of this procedure, as it enhances the visibility of structures and abnormalities within the maxillofacial area, leading to more accurate diagnoses. For procedures without contrast, CPT® Code 70486 is applicable, while CPT® Code 70488 is used when a CT scan is first performed without contrast, followed by the administration of contrast for further imaging. Ultimately, the physician interprets the findings from the CT scan, documenting any abnormalities in a written report.
