About the Role
The Medical Coding Specialist II is responsible for correctly coding healthcare claims and analyzing denials to obtain proper reimbursement. This role codes hospital outpatient and professional services using official code sets and classification systems to ensure accurate data based on documentation.
Title: Medical Coder II
Location: Remote
Schedule: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM in Eastern, Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones
Department: Insurance
Reports To: Coding Supervisor
Compensation: $26–$30 per hour, depending on qualifications
Key Responsibilities
- Read and analyze patient records
- Accurately code services including evaluation and management, laboratory, imaging, injections and infusions, and specialty surgical procedures in clinic and hospital outpatient settings
- Monitor, research, and correct claim denials within health plan requirements and document follow-up trends
- Submit clean claims for payment
- Comply with federal and state standards using CCI edits, Medicare bulletins, ACR bulletins, and related guidance
- Maintain knowledge of and comply with coding guidelines
- Locate documentation in multiple EMR systems such as Epic, ECW, Cerner, and Meditech
- Interact with clients to ensure accuracy
- Maintain patient confidentiality and information security
- Maintain an error rate of 5% or less
- Meet production goals assigned by the supervisor
Requirements & Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 5 years of on-the-job experience in abstract coding and coding denials for both hospital outpatient and professional claims
- Payor and policy research experience
- Experience with the Epic platform
- Current certification from AAPC or AHIMA, such as:
- RHIA
- RHIT
- CCS
- CPC
- Or equivalent certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or equivalent in Health Information Management
- Meditech experience
- Rural health clinic experience
- Critical access healthcare experience
