HIM Coder 2 - Inpatient Coding

Tampa General Hospital

Under the general supervision of a manager and direct supervision of a supervisor, the Coder 2 is responsible for reviewing medical record documentation and accurately assigning diagnosis and procedure codes.

  • Review medical record documentation to assign diagnosis and procedure codes accurately.
  • Use the encoder system to sequence codes and calculate the corresponding MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and APC grouper.
  • Abstract patient information into computerized medical record and billing systems while maintaining data accuracy and integrity.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Documentation Improvement Team, Coding Team Coordinators, and/or Supervisor to clarify ambiguous documentation or diagnostic and procedural information.
  • Apply knowledge of Medicare and managed care regulations, ICD-9, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and CPT coding systems.
  • Maintain department quality and productivity standards while learning routine coding functions for low to medium complexity medical records.
  • May provide guidance and assistance to Coder I staff, apprentices, and clinical practice students.

Work location: TGH WFLA

Eligible for remote work: fully remote

Schedule: Monday through Friday, day shift

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Possession of a national coding certification from AHIMA as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Advanced knowledge of diagnosis and procedure code sequencing guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology.
  • Experience with computerized encoding and abstracting software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • At least 2 years of coding experience in an acute care setting, preferably in a Trauma 1 teaching hospital or large healthcare delivery system.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently.
  • Ability to complete work efficiently and collaborate with coding leadership on documentation, coding, and reimbursement issues.
