Ensures codes are assigned correctly and sequenced appropriately in accordance with government and insurance regulations.
Performs coding in compliance with medical coding guidelines and follows up with rendering providers to clarify unclear information.
Conducts ad hoc audits to ensure coding accuracy and fidelity to guidelines.
Serves as a subject matter expert for Southwest Network on accurate and efficient coding practices.
Analyzes medical records and identifies documentation deficiencies.
This is a hybrid position that includes travel between Southwest Network sites and work in the community and office settings.
Education and experience
- Associate degree in medical coding or successful completion of a certification program required.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working in multi-specialty coding.
Licensure and certification
- Valid Arizona state fingerprint clearance card required.
- Valid Arizona driver's license required.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
Knowledge and skills
- Strong understanding of medical terminology.
- In-depth understanding of medical coding guidelines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of medical information in accordance with HIPAA.
- Competence with electronic medical records software and standard office equipment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to use the internet and web browsers effectively.
- Preferred typing speed of 25 to 40 WPM.
- Ability to travel between sites and in the community; reliable vehicle required.
- Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed.
