HIM Coder Analyst II

The HIM Coder Analyst II role is responsible for reviewing and interpreting patient medical record documentation and assigning ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes accurately and timely at the highest level of specificity. This position primarily codes complex ambulatory surgery and observation visit records, and also supports outpatient ancillary clinic, specialty clinic, and emergency room coding as needed.

The role includes abstracting specified information from patient records and entering data into the electronic health record system for billing and organizational reporting. The coder collaborates with physicians, other providers, and Clinical Documentation Specialists to support documentation quality and coding accuracy, while maintaining current knowledge of coding rules, documentation standards, and regulatory changes.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS required
  • Minimum of 1 year of current, continuous full-time ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 ambulatory surgery, observation, and/or inpatient coding and abstracting experience required
  • Pediatric coding experience highly desired

Skills and qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of ICD and CPT code sets and Medicare/Medicaid rules and guidelines
  • Experience with electronic health record systems, automated encoders, and related software/hardware
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word preferred
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Goal-oriented, flexible, and energetic
  • Strong coding and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to solve problems using job knowledge and current policies and procedures
  • Must pass an on-site coding skills assessment with a score of 90% or higher prior to hire

Certification/licensure

  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS required
  • Current AHIMA continuing education certification records required
