Under experienced leadership, the Professional Surgical Coder I is responsible for accurate and timely assignment of codes to diagnoses and procedures for outpatient and inpatient diagnostic and procedural coding.
Using current ICD-10 and CPT-4 guidelines, this role identifies diagnoses, secondary diagnoses, comorbidities, complications, HACs, E/M codes, and procedure codes. The coder also queries providers when documentation needs clarification and works with medical leadership to address documentation trends.
The position reports to the Billing and Coding Manager and supports coding accuracy, quality, and productivity standards.
Required and preferred qualifications
- Associate's degree preferred in Medical Information Technology or a related field
- Coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD-10-CM coding, and prospective payment preferred
- 2-3 years of experience in a surgical practice preferred
- CPC certification or CCS-P certification required
- Strong computer and data entry skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding
- Ability to interpret medical records and communicate clearly with providers
- Ability to maintain accuracy, quality, and productivity standards
