Under the direct supervision of the Hospital Coding Supervisor, the Coder II abstracts inpatient, outpatient, clinic, and/or emergency department medical record documentation to select and sequence appropriate ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, and/or CPT4 codes.
The role is responsible for accurate code assignment for all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures, and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record. Coding must follow official coding guidelines and support complete, accurate, timely, and consistent code assignment, including final DRG assignment.
Work is performed in accordance with Health Information Management Department policies and MUSC-approved procedures.
High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Certified coder credential from a nationally recognized accrediting body required, such as:
- CPC
- CPC-H
- CCS
- CCS-P
- CSTR
- RHIT
- RHIA
AAPC or AHIMA credential required.
Certification must be maintained to remain in the Coder II role.
