Position Summary
Abstracts ICD-10 and CPT codes for diagnoses and procedures for professional services. Serves as a mentor to Professional Coders I and II. Reviews and analyzes medical records to verify and code diagnoses, evaluation and management services, minor procedures, and other required codes for completeness and accuracy.
Also codes and/or reviews principal diagnoses, co-morbidities, complications, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, and applicable supplies, medications, and injectable drugs. Researches coding guidelines and reports material issues to management to support accurate coding practices.
Maintains communication with management, practice managers, and providers to ensure timely notification of documentation issues. Interacts with other revenue cycle team members and provider clinics. Responsible for continuing education of clinical staff members and providers.
Must maintain highly effective written and verbal communication skills, understand legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues related to medical coding, billing, and documentation, and maintain an accuracy score of 95% or higher for CPT and ICD-10 coding.
Must attend all mandatory education sessions and complete continuing education credits required to maintain CPC certification. Must be able to meet competing deadlines, stay highly organized, remain goal driven, and work well with others.
Qualifications
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required, or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) / CCS-P
- Previous coding experience required
- Specialty certification through AAPC or AHIMA highly desired
- Proficiency in multispecialty E/M and bedside procedure coding required
- Proficiency in at least one specialty surgical coding area required; multispecialty surgical coding preferred
- Experience working in a physician office preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT required
- Good communication skills essential
- Medical office setting experience preferred
- Strong time management skills
- Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and efficiency
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Teams
- Must have reliable high-speed internet and agree to IT security policies for remote access work
