Medical Coder III

Overview

Codes diagnoses and procedures of patient records and abstracts information for reimbursement, research, and statistical reporting. Provides daily feedback and education to providers, staff, and patients of BMG. Assists with education of current coding staff and performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Codes diagnoses and procedures of records.
  • Completes assigned goals.
  • Serves as a resource to physician office staff, clinical documentation specialists, case managers, and others.
  • Acts as a lead for the team, assisting with onboarding of new staff and education on more specialized workflows.
  • Assists in researching new specialty areas and new treatments in medicine.
  • Works with new acquisitions on documentation improvement and medical necessity, including education.
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

Experience

  • Over 1 year of experience in physician/professional, outpatient surgery, and/or emergency department coding.
  • Experience coding physician/professional outpatient records, including ancillary, emergency department, or outpatient surgery records, using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4.
  • 2 years of experience in an acute care facility, professional office, or integrated health system.
  • 1 year of documented successful physician education.

Education and Training

  • Skill and proficiency in coding physician/professional and outpatient records using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4, with up to 5 years of experience in an acute care facility, professional office, or integrated health system.
  • Strong written, verbal, and oral communication skills in standard English.
  • Ability to write legibly and record information accurately.
  • CPC, CPC-H, CPC-P, CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, or RHIA.
  • HCPCS, ICD-10, ICD-9, and CPT-4 knowledge.
  • Associate degree preferred.

Special Skills

  • Physician education.
  • Leadership and mentoring.
  • Workflow documentation.

Licensure

  • One of the following certifications: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCS-P), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC/CPCH), or Certified Professional Coder Payer (CPCP).
