The Billing Specialist supports the revenue cycle by performing billing functions using EPIC billing software and related workflows. This role is responsible for posting payments, researching past-due accounts, following up on unpaid claims in assigned work queues, and making collection calls on unpaid balances. The position also investigates explanation of benefits (EOB) denials and helps patients resolve account inquiries.
Key duties include patient account support, claim processing, compliance with HIPAA and OSHA standards, timely EMR documentation, and coordination with clinic staff and the billing service.
Skills and knowledge
- Knowledge of billing and collections processes
- Familiarity with traditional health insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and workers' compensation
- Understanding of CPT and ICD-9/ICD-10 coding principles
- Knowledge of third-party payer procedures and practices
- Ability to interpret patient chart documentation related to charge entry and reimbursement
- Experience using computerized patient billing software
- Understanding of insurance explanation of benefits (EOBs)
- Ability to research unpaid claims and patient accounts and take appropriate follow-up action
- Basic math skills to balance EOBs and batches
- Proficiency with calculators, computers, spreadsheets, word processing software, and Excel
- Familiarity with HIPAA preferred
- Strong general office skills, including fax, copier, and phone system use
