Professional Medical Coder I

Lexington Health

Assign appropriate ICD and CPT codes for reimbursement and statistical purposes. Review hospital-based professional services and outpatient medical documentation, abstract clinical information from medical records, and support accurate documentation and coding compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assign ICD and CPT codes following ICD, CPT, CMS, and other regulatory coding guidelines
  • Abstract clinical information for reimbursement and statistical reporting
  • Review and interpret medical documentation for accurate code assignment
  • Assist with coding claim edits and review claim denials for correction
  • Collaborate with physicians, coding staff, and other personnel to support quality improvement
  • Stay current with coding, compliance, and documentation trends
Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year of experience in professional coding or a related field
  • Coding fellowship may substitute for the experience requirement
  • AAPC or AHIMA coding credential required and/or specialty certification, as approved by the director
  • CCA or CPC-A only eligible if the coding fellowship has been successfully completed
  • Experience with CPT, ICD diagnosis coding, and E/M documentation guidelines (1995/1997/2021)
  • Experience with CCI edits, Medicare LCDs, and NCDs
  • Understanding of state and federal regulations and payer billing requirements
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience using electronic health record software
  • OB/GYN experience preferred
