Assign appropriate ICD and CPT codes for reimbursement and statistical purposes. Review hospital-based professional services and outpatient medical documentation, abstract clinical information from medical records, and support accurate documentation and coding compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Assign ICD and CPT codes following ICD, CPT, CMS, and other regulatory coding guidelines
- Abstract clinical information for reimbursement and statistical reporting
- Review and interpret medical documentation for accurate code assignment
- Assist with coding claim edits and review claim denials for correction
- Collaborate with physicians, coding staff, and other personnel to support quality improvement
- Stay current with coding, compliance, and documentation trends
Requirements & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1 year of experience in professional coding or a related field
- Coding fellowship may substitute for the experience requirement
- AAPC or AHIMA coding credential required and/or specialty certification, as approved by the director
- CCA or CPC-A only eligible if the coding fellowship has been successfully completed
- Experience with CPT, ICD diagnosis coding, and E/M documentation guidelines (1995/1997/2021)
- Experience with CCI edits, Medicare LCDs, and NCDs
- Understanding of state and federal regulations and payer billing requirements
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Experience using electronic health record software
- OB/GYN experience preferred
