Responsible for coordinating the day-to-day billing operations for the department and hospital outpatient billing service using a centralized medical information system. The role focuses on accurate abstraction of patient data according to ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and CMS coding guidelines, entering abstracted information into the electronic medical record, and querying physicians when documentation is unclear or incomplete.
Key duties include:
- Coordinating pertinent medical record information for physician billing submission
- Verifying insurance and serving as a liaison for patient billing questions and outstanding balances
- Ensuring authorizations, referrals, and required forms are complete
- Analyzing medical records and identifying documentation deficiencies
- Monitoring work queues for coding and billing corrections
- Assigning CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes for reimbursement and data collection
- Communicating with physicians and advanced practice providers for missing or incomplete documentation
- Addressing NCCI, NCD, and LCD edits
- Maintaining productivity and quality standards
- Reporting unusual circumstances, errors, discrepancies, and risk factors to management
Required
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- At least 1 year of coding experience for professional services
- Strong understanding of physiology, medical terminology, and anatomy
- Proficiency in typing and computer skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
- Ability to maintain required coding quality and productivity standards
- One of the following certifications: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based (CCS-P)
Preferred
- Experience with outpatient hospital ICD-10 diagnosis coding
- Experience with CPT procedural coding and E&M coding
- AHIMA or AAPC coding credential
