Outpatient and inpatient medical coding position supporting the VA Portland Health Care System.
The role involves remote coding with occasional on-site attendance for coding meetings, training, or issue resolution at the Portland VA Medical Center. The coder will review medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes for outpatient encounters and inpatient admissions.
This is a 1-year contract with full-time coverage expected based on volume. Priority cases must be coded within 1 business day, outpatient cases within 7 days of receipt, and inpatient cases within 7 days of discharge.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in outpatient and/or inpatient coding
- Ability to transition between outpatient, inpatient facility, and inpatient professional coding
- One of the following certifications:
- AHIMA: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P
- AAPC: CPC or CPC-H
- Completion of an accredited program in coding certification, Health Information Management (HIM), or Health Information Technology (HIT)
Required Skills
- Proficiency with ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and E&M coding
- Knowledge of Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) bundling guidelines
- Ability to apply modifiers such as GR, G8, QK, QX, QS, QY, and G9
- Familiarity with VA VistA/CPRS systems preferred, or willingness to train
- Proficiency with VA-required coding software/encoder
- Knowledge of DRG assignment and PCS coding for inpatient procedures
- Understanding of POA (Present on Admission) coding
- Ability to code PCS procedure types including cardiac cath, mechanical ventilation, excisional debridement, dialysis, chemotherapy, and PICC/central line
- Knowledge of 2021 E&M guidelines
- Ability to identify billable vs. non-billable encounters
- Strong productivity and accuracy standards, including 90 outpatient encounters per 8-hour day and 95% coding accuracy
