The Medical Records Coder II is a certified coding professional responsible for reviewing complex medical records and assigning accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes. This role supports Duke Health's centralized revenue cycle organization by helping ensure proper reimbursement for hospital and/or professional charges.
This position is 100% remote. Duke University remote workers must reside in one of the approved states.
The role includes reviewing documentation, ensuring correct diagnosis and procedure sequencing, supporting DRG/APC assignment, educating physicians on coding practices, and participating in ongoing training and continuing education.
Education
- High school diploma required
Experience / Certification
- Must hold one of the following active/current certifications:
- RHIA
- RHIT
- CCS
- CPC
- HCS-D
- RHIA: no experience required
- RHIT: no experience required
- CCS: 1 year of coding experience required
- CPC or HCS-D: 2 years of coding experience required
Knowledge and Skills
- Advanced ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding conventions
- Anatomy and physiology
- Medical terminology
- Extensive DRG/APC reimbursement knowledge
- Coding software familiarity
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Data entry / CRT proficiency
