The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures, and conditions as documented in the patient medical record. Coding is performed using ICD-10 and CPT classification systems and must follow official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. Work must align with Health Information Management Department policies and MUSC procedures.
Associate’s degree in health information technology or a related field, or 5 years of coding experience.
Coding certification such as CPC or CCS is required.
With an associate’s degree, 2-3 years of coding experience and familiarity with coding software are required.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to resolve coding issues.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, or another coding credential is required.
