The Hospital Coder II reviews and accurately codes and abstracts complex hospital services, including same-day surgeries, inpatient procedures, overnight and multi-night stay services, and other complex medical services.
This role uses appropriate coding guidelines to assign ICD and CPT codes, ensures compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payer guidelines, and works with the Clinical Documentation Improvement team to support accurate DRG assignment.
The position also collaborates closely with management to resolve problems and meet deadlines.
Requirements & Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required, or 3 years of inpatient coding experience in lieu of CCS
- 3–6 years of coding experience, or demonstrated success in coding complex medical services with consistent accuracy
- Knowledge of ICD-10 coding principles and guidelines
- Basic computer skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or bachelor's degree
