Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.
The Cancer Registrar I performs medical record review in the Epic electronic medical record system, completes case finding in the CNEXT database, and conducts follow-up on all reportable cases. This work supports Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation and Washington State Cancer Registry (WSCR) reporting requirements.
This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, with some on-campus work expected. There may be flexibility for certain situations, and out-of-state applicants should check with the recruiter regarding work location options.
Responsibilities include:
- Case finding cancer cases in compliance with CoC and WSCR guidelines
- Conducting follow-up on all reportable cases
- Determining case reportability
- Assisting with concurrent data collection for Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS)
- Maintaining physician number files
- Participating in cancer registry meetings and reportability discussions
- Joining monthly SEER Educate training
- Resolving case find discrepancies with team members
- Assisting with release of information in compliance with HIPAA
- Supporting departmental reference materials
- Assisting with preparation for CoC survey
- Participating in Oncology Data Specialist credential training
- Performing other duties as assigned
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 1 year of previous cancer registry or medical records experience
- Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) and/or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Ability to understand, analyze, and interpret medical and treatment information
- Excellent time management, attention to detail, and organizational skills
- Critical and analytical thinking
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and make decisions
- Strong dedication to team success
Preferred qualifications:
- 2+ years of cancer registry experience, preferably in a hospital setting
- In-depth knowledge of NAACCR data items, Solid Tumor Rules, and SEER rules and standards
- Ability to use cancer registry resources such as CAForum and SEER Inquiries
- Knowledge of the CNEXT database
- Experience with the Epic electronic medical record system
