The Specialist Coder works under the direction of the Director of Health Informatics and supports the record processing operations of the Medical Records Department.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coding, abstracting, and analyzing medical records
- Assisting with assembly, tracking, and completion of incomplete medical records when needed
- Communicating effectively with physicians, staff, vendors, and other customers
Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of a BS, AS, or correspondence program in a health information field or other healthcare program with strong skills in medical terminology and coursework in anatomy and physiology
Experience
- Previous acute care medical record coding experience in ICD-10-CM and CPT
- Minimum of 2 years of experience required
- Preferred: 5 years of previous acute care medical record coding experience
Certifications
- RHIA, RHIT, or other healthcare-related credentials required
- Preferred: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
