Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Coding Specialist to join our healthcare team. This role is responsible for accurately translating medical diagnoses, procedures, and services into standardized codes to support proper billing and record-keeping. The position requires a strong understanding of medical coding systems, electronic health records (EHR), and medical billing processes.
The Coding Specialist plays an important role in maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations and supporting efficient revenue cycle management.
Duties
- Assign ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT codes to medical diagnoses and procedures based on detailed review of medical records and documentation.
- Ensure accurate coding for billing purposes in accordance with healthcare regulations and payer requirements.
- Review medical records to verify the completeness and accuracy of documentation related to diagnoses and treatments.
- Collaborate with office staff to clarify documentation or resolve coding discrepancies.
- Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, medical terminology, and healthcare regulations.
- Assist with claims submissions and follow up on unpaid or rejected claims through medical collection processes.
- Support compliance audits by documenting coding decisions and maintaining organized records.
- Participate in ongoing training to stay current with coding standard updates and billing regulations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in medical coding, preferably in a laboratory setting.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT coding systems.
- Familiarity with medical billing processes, collections, and insurance claim procedures.
- Experience with laboratory billing systems is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and clinical documentation standards.
- Ability to interpret complex medical records accurately and apply appropriate codes efficiently.
- Medical Billing experience: 1 year required.
- Out of Network experience: 1 year preferred.
