Optum is seeking a medical coder specializing in same day surgery facility outpatient coding. This full-time role supports accurate coding and documentation to help improve health outcomes and advance health equity.
The position works Monday through Friday during normal business hours, with occasional overtime as needed. The role offers telecommuting flexibility from anywhere within the U.S., subject to company telecommuter policy.
Requirements & Qualifications
Required qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Active professional coder certification from AHIMA and/or AAPC, such as CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-H/COC, CIC, CCS-P, or CPC, maintained annually
- 2+ years of experience with ICD-10, CPT, and modifiers
- 2+ years of experience in acute surgery
- Intermediate-level experience using a PC in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Excel and EMR systems
- Intermediate-level attention to detail, accuracy, and communication skills
Core responsibilities
- Assign ICD-10, CPT, and modifier codes for facility outpatient same day surgery services
- Apply official coding guidelines and client-specific coding standards
- Follow AAPC and/or AHIMA ethical coding standards
- Understand Medicare APC codes and related coding policies
- Query physicians and forms when appropriate
- Maintain current knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, NCCI edits, Medicare LCD, and NCD policies
- Participate in coding meetings and educational events
