The Medical Coding/Billing Specialist supports the financial operations of the clinic by accurately reviewing patient charts, clinical documentation, and medical documentation to process patient charges, submit insurance claims, and ensure timely reimbursement for outpatient services.
This role is responsible for ensuring coding accuracy for diagnoses, procedures, and treatments. The position works closely with front-desk staff, providers, and insurance companies to maintain efficient billing workflows and positive patient experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Submit clean and accurate insurance claims for clinic visits, procedures, and services
- Verify patient demographics, insurance eligibility, and authorizations prior to billing
- Review provider documentation to ensure appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding
- Resolve claim rejections, denials, and underpayments through follow-up and appeals
- Post insurance payments, patient payments, adjustments, and denials in the billing system
- Communicate with patients regarding balances, statements, and insurance questions
- Collaborate with clinic staff to correct registration or documentation errors
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, payer guidelines, and clinic billing policies
- Generate billing reports and assist with revenue tracking as requested
- Support month-end billing and reconciliation processes
Requirements & Qualifications
- Knowledge of outpatient clinic billing procedures
- Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding standards
- Experience using EHR and practice management systems
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- 1–3 years of medical billing experience in a clinic or outpatient setting
- Medical coding certification preferred, such as CPC or CBCS
- Experience billing for primary care, acute care, and/or OB/GYN preferred
- Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance plans preferred
