Responsibilities
- Review and interpret medical records to assign appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and DRG codes for diagnoses, procedures, and treatments.
- Ensure accurate entry of billing information into EMR or EHR systems for seamless claims processing.
- Submit insurance claims electronically or via paper to various payers, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers.
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims by investigating discrepancies, appealing rejections, and initiating collections when necessary.
- Maintain detailed documentation of coding decisions, billing activities, and correspondence related to medical records and collections.
- Stay current with updates in medical terminology, coding guidelines, and healthcare regulations to ensure compliance.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify documentation or resolve billing issues promptly.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Proficiency in using EMR/EHR systems for data entry and record management; Cerner EMR experience is valuable but not required.
- Expertise in ICD-9/ICD-10 coding systems, CPT coding, DRG assignment, and coding guidelines.
- Experience with medical billing processes, insurance claims submission, and collections management.
- Familiarity with medical records management and HIPAA confidentiality requirements.
- Ability to analyze complex medical documentation to determine appropriate codes and billing procedures.
