Overview

Join the Billing Department team as an EMS Biller and Coder in Elmhurst, IL. This is an on-site position, not remote.

The role is responsible for scrubbing sites for active health insurance while complying with insurance, local, state, and federal billing requirements. The position also involves adding appropriate key identifiers from Patient Care Reports and coordinating ICD codes.

Team members will also conduct insurance verification as needed and complete pre-billing training to qualify for the role.

Responsibilities

  • Review Patient Care Reports thoroughly and use available documentation to establish medical necessity, levels of service, origin/destination modifiers, and the patient’s condition at the time of transport.
  • Communicate with internal and external departments professionally to obtain missing documentation or clarify existing documentation.
  • Assign condition codes for transport reasons with a minimum of 95% accuracy.
  • Meet coding productivity standards, especially during training.
  • Review reports thoroughly to bill appropriately while following policies and procedures.
  • Use software applications to complete pending assignments and respond to urgent requests.
  • Attend department meetings and education sessions to build knowledge of billing and coding guidelines.
  • Place phone calls to insurance payers to obtain patient policy numbers when not available through insurance sites or documentation.
  • Ensure accuracy in data entry and maintain attention to detail while using keyboard shortcuts for speed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with insurance, local, state, and federal billing requirements.
  • Work efficiently both independently and in a team environment.
  • Handle assigned correspondence and complete other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • College preferred, but not required.
  • Medical Billing or Coding certification preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in customer care, account management, or a similar role.
  • Healthcare and auto knowledge preferred.
  • Quick learner with strong motivation and excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Fluency in a second language is a plus; Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and manage periods of high call volume and stress.
  • Positive attitude, good judgment, and ability to escalate accounts when needed.
  • Ability to receive and apply feedback.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Typing speed of at least 45 WPM preferred.
  • Experience in an active office environment.
  • Ability to work with two monitors and split screens.
  • Ability to sit or stand for 8 hours minimum in an office setting.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, email, chat applications, and other software.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply job-related rules, policies, and procedures.
