Houston Methodist is seeking an Inpatient Coder to accurately assign diagnostic and procedure codes for inpatient encounters based on documentation in the electronic medical record. The role supports coding compliance, abstraction accuracy, and timely processing of coded accounts while adhering to official guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes accurately using an electronic encoder
- Review medical record documentation to determine principal/final diagnosis, comorbidities, complications, secondary conditions, and procedures
- Abstract data into EPIC/EHR and the medical record abstracting system
- Communicate with physicians and stakeholders to clarify documentation when needed
- Support coding quality, productivity, and AR goals for uncoded accounts
- Maintain compliance with AHIMA ethical coding standards and hospital policies
Requirements & Qualifications
Education:
- Associate’s degree or higher in a CAHIIM-accredited program, or an additional two years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
Experience:
- One year of relevant inpatient coding experience, or successful completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program or Outpatient to Inpatient Coder Transition Program
Certifications:
- RHIT, RHIA, or CCS required
Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG/APC systems, official coding guidelines, and coding compliance
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Experience with electronic medical records and imaging systems preferred
- Proficiency with electronic encoder applications preferred
- Strong PC and software skills for coding and abstracting systems
- Effective communication skills with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers
