History and Development of ICD

The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems which is commonly known as ICD – International Classification of Diseases, represented by codes based upon the morbidity and mortality statistical surveys in order to classify the health conditions or diseases including signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and external causes of injury or diseases. These ICD codes are categorized and consists of 3-5 characters. Each categories includes a set of similar diseases.

The first attempt to classify the disease systemically is done by Sir George Knibbs, who published the first classification of disease under the title ‘Nosologia methodica’ in the beginning of 19th century. And after many reviews and revisions currently ICD-10 published by the World Health Organization is being followed by most of the countries. To know more about the developments please click the below link
